Common questions, answered honestly. If yours isn't here, ask us — we'll add it.
For most people, no — cosmetic injections feel like a quick, mild pinch and only take a second or two per spot. The needles used for neurotoxin treatments are very small. Some areas, like around the lips or the corners of the mouth, are a little more sensitive than others, but most patients in our Saginaw office tell us the discomfort is much less than they were expecting. For sensitive patients, we can apply a topical numbing cream before treatment.
Neurotoxin results (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau) typically begin to show in three to five days and reach their full effect at about two weeks. Most treatments last around three to four months before a maintenance appointment is needed.
Some areas last longer than others — for example, masseter Botox for jaw slimming and TMJ relief tends to last five to six months. Dermal fillers behave differently and can last anywhere from several months to over a year depending on the product and the area treated.
That depends entirely on your injector and your treatment plan. Modern Botox techniques aim for natural movement, soft expressions, and a result that looks like a more rested version of you — not a different person.
The “frozen” look that people associate with bad celebrity Botox usually comes from over-treatment, not from Botox itself. At Artistry Aesthetics, the goal is always that friends and family will say you look great without being able to point to what changed.
They do completely different jobs. Botox (and other neurotoxins like Dysport and Xeomin) relax muscles, which softens lines that come from movement — frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and so on. Dermal fillers add volume to areas where the face has lost or never had it — lips, cheeks, jawline, under the eyes.
Many patients combine the two: Botox for expression lines, filler for volume and contour. They are entirely separate products and can absolutely be done in the same visit when appropriate.
All four are forms of botulinum toxin Type A and all relax muscles in similar ways. They are, however, made by different companies, use different units (so dosing isn’t a one-to-one comparison between products), and behave slightly differently in terms of how quickly they kick in and how they spread from the injection point.
Most experienced injectors carry more than one of these products and can recommend the right one for your goals. The differences are usually subtle to the patient — what matters most is the skill of the injector, not which brand is in the syringe.
Pricing depends on the product, the area treated, and how much is needed for your goals. Neurotoxins are generally priced per unit, and fillers are priced per syringe. There is no flat “one size fits all” price for an aesthetic plan because every face and every set of goals is different.
We are happy to walk through specific pricing during your consultation. Our clients across Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, Frankenmuth, and the broader Mid-Michigan area appreciate having a clear picture of what their plan looks like before any treatment begins.
There is no single right age. Some patients start in their late 20s or 30s, often called preventative treatment, when they notice early expression lines beginning to form. Many start in their 40s and 50s when wrinkles are more set, and plenty start in their 60s and 70s and see beautiful results.
The best time to start is when something has started to bother you and you want to address it. We have patients across every adult decade in our Saginaw practice.
For neurotoxin treatments, almost none. Most patients head straight back to work, errands, or family activities after their appointment. There may be small bumps at the injection sites that fade within an hour or two, and very occasionally a small bruise.
For filler, mild swelling and the occasional bruise are a bit more common and can last a few days. We will walk you through exactly what to expect for your specific treatment before you leave.
Before your visit, try to avoid things that thin the blood and increase bruising for a day or two if possible — alcohol, fish oil, ibuprofen, aspirin, and certain supplements like vitamin E. Come in with clean skin if you can. If you have a big event coming up, schedule your appointment at least two weeks in advance to give your results time to settle.
After your visit, avoid heavy exercise, lying flat, and excessive heat (saunas, hot tubs) for about 24 hours. Try not to rub or massage the treated areas. Otherwise, you can return to your normal life almost immediately.
Botulinum toxins and modern hyaluronic acid fillers have been used cosmetically for decades and have well-established safety profiles when administered by qualified providers. The most common side effects are mild and short-lived: small bruises, minor swelling, and occasional tenderness at the injection site.
More serious complications are uncommon and usually relate to injection technique, which is why provider experience matters so much. At your consultation, we review your medical history thoroughly to make sure any planned treatment is appropriate for you.
We do not perform cosmetic neurotoxin or filler treatments on patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. There is not enough research on injectables in pregnancy or while nursing to confidently say they are safe, so reputable aesthetic practices universally hold off out of an abundance of caution.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to become pregnant, or unsure, please let us know during your consultation — we are happy to discuss timing and create a plan for when treatment becomes appropriate.
No. This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and the answer is reassuring: when neurotoxin wears off, your muscles return to their pre-treatment activity and your lines gradually return to where they would have been on their natural timeline. You don’t get punished for stopping.
In fact, with consistent treatment over time, many patients notice that their lines at rest become softer and slower to return because the skin has had years of breaks from being repeatedly creased. Stopping simply means your timeline picks back up where it would have been.
Look for someone with proper credentials — typically a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or registered nurse with specific aesthetic training — plus real experience and before-and-after examples that look natural to you. A good injector will listen to your goals, examine your face in motion, explain what they recommend and why, and be willing to take a conservative approach if you want to start small.
If a provider feels rushed, pushes a flat package over the phone before seeing your face, or seems uninterested in the details of your goals, that is a signal to keep looking. The best aesthetic results almost always come from a thoughtful, patient consultation — not a transactional appointment.
Cosmetic injectables work just as well for men, and the number of men coming in for treatment grows every year — including across Saginaw and the Tri-Cities. The treatment patterns are different (generally aiming for a flatter brow, more defined jawline, and a more rested look rather than a lifted or arched effect), but the products and underlying science are the same.
We treat plenty of men in our practice and have a separate guide that walks through the specifics of men’s aesthetic patterns. If you are a man considering treatment for the first time, this is a great topic to bring up at your consultation.
Cosmetic injectables are personal, and the best information always comes from a real conversation about your face and your goals. Reach out to Artistry Aesthetics, PLLC in Saginaw to schedule a consultation. We see patients from across Mid-Michigan — Saginaw, Bay City, Midland, Frankenmuth, Bridgeport, Birch Run, Thomas Township, and the surrounding Tri-Cities communities — and we are happy to walk you through everything start to finish.
